Why fix a pothole?

Birds and paving contractors love potholes but that’s about it. Potholes occur when the materials within asphalt or concrete break down or when the sub-base below the surface fails. A pothole is a hole within a roadway, parking lot, or driveway and there are so many reasons they should repaired immediately. Reason #1: Potholes hold water and once the water penetrates below the surface channeling occurs not only breaking down the materials all the way down to the sub-base but as it channels under the pavement other sections begin to break down. This is a big reason why asphalt & concrete crack. When the cracking within asphalt becomes sporadic, it is also known as alligatoring or spidering. All of this can begin from one small pothole.

Potholes are fairly inexpensive to have repaired but the larger the pothole the more the repair will cost. On the hand, if a pothole is not repaired the costs can become very expensive. More material & labor = more money. If a parking lot, driveway, or roadway is deprived of regular maintenance then you are looking at not only labor and materials but also large equipment, trucking, etc. It can get very expensive very fast and in most cases it all started from one small pothole that was not repaired.

The cost of repairing a pothole is much less than having to pay for a customer’s car’s alignment or fender damage or even worse, medical bills because someone trips or hits it while riding a bicycle. But then again, if you enjoy watching birds play and splash in the water, a pothole can be very entertaining after a good rain storm.
