APS Wheelchair Lifts began with a deeply personal challenge.
As paving contractors, APS has paved many parking lots and have poured numerous concrete driveways. Building a relationship with our customers is very important because we don’t just want to do one and done jobs but rather, we want our customers to call on us for all of their needs and if we can help, we will and it will be our pleasure to do so.
A long time customer wanted to stay in the home she loved but she was getting older and her health wasn’t the best. Simple tasks like leaving the house for church or medical appointments became difficult and increasingly unsafe.
The stairs in her home became her worst nightmare. Her family told us about their challenge so we started looking for a solution.
What we discovered was shocking. Most accessibility equipment cost tens of thousands of dollars. Even something as simple as a wheelchair ramp would have cost several thousand dollars and required more space than her home allowed.
Our customer didn’t need something complicated. She needed something simple, safe, and affordable.
But after weeks of searching, the answer became clear: that solution just didn’t seem exist or so we thought. We kept making calls to different manufacturers around the country but most every one of their solutions were wheelchair ramps. We don’t have a problem with wheelchair ramps. As a matter of fact, since we ran into this issue we now also install ramps. But as we said before, they’re just not a good fit for folks with limited room and that was this particular customers issue.
One evening back in Fall of 2024 we had an encounter with a couple of brothers who ran into a similar issue with their mother and they decided to take matters into their own hands. Fortunately one of the brothers was an engineer and the other wa also an engineer and worked with a steel fabricator. We developed a relationship with the brothers and they brought in some of their associate within the steel trade.
Working out of a garage/ workshop in Madison, GA, they designed the first lift with a simple goal: create something reliable and practical that families could actually afford. The design focused on durability, safety, and straightforward functionality rather than unnecessary complexity. We installed the lift in the garage of our customer’s home. She was ecstatic to say the least. She now has the ability to easily move from her car into her home with close to zero effort. Afterwards, she told us that before we installed her new lift she would lie in bed at night thinking about those 3 steps. Her stress is now gone and we are so glad to be just a small part of providing her a solution.
Our brother friends took what started as a small project for one family quickly and grew it into something much bigger.
We all now work together as a team and have helped many families provide their loved ones the ability to access from floor to floor safely and conveniently. We have given this division of our business what we think is the perfect motto: FREEDOM STARTS HERE!
